Thanks.
in ancient times the easiest way to measure things was to use the most convenient measuring tools available that anybody could afford to own: your own body parts!.
yes, you could use your own foot to measure "feet".. .
you could use the width of your thumb to measure an inch (call it by whatever name you like.).

Funny thing is today i was reading "thy kingdom come" i think that's what it was. About the measurements of the Pyramid at Giza also how Russell used them to back up his 1874 as being the return of Christ.
Then i read on Wickepedia that Ruther condemned pyramidology in 1928 as not only unscriptural but also inspired by the Devil. I don't know where that can be found do you?
okay, you're probably wondering what the hell this funky little astronaut has to do with this.
first a quick setup.... like most on here i'm sure we're all aware of the struggle to rid ourselves of our jw programming.
top of my mind lately is realizing i'm not living my life.
One morning I was cooking breakfast before anyone was up and i went through to the other room to put the computer on. It was already on. I must have plugged it in and logged on. No recollection of doing any of it. (Got alot on my mind and i'm getting old.)
it was a beautiful, sunny day.
i was in the supermarket doing an early morning shop when i see an old friend of the family, a jw sister.. she asked me if i'd gone to the memorial and i told her no.
she said that the end is so close what with all the earthquakes and brother truthseeker, you need to come back to jehovah otherwise you will die and so will your children.
Djeggnog,
That's an ignorant thing for you to say about Pastor Russell since in the 1915 revision of The Time is at Hand, Studies in the Scriptures, Vol. 2 (1889), "Study IV, The Times of the Gentiles," pp.76-78, Russell wrote the followingThat's an ignorant thing for you to say about Pastor Russell since in the 1915 revision of The Time is at Hand, Studies in the Scriptures, Vol. 2 (1889), "Study IV, The Times of the Gentiles," pp.76-78, Russell wrote the following
Why? This publication was published back in 1959, while this is 2011. What sense does it make for you to be pulling out old quotes from obsolete publications now out-of-print that Jehovah's Witnesses do not and may not have ever believed? Do you wish to win a debate using old quotes? If so, do this with someone else, for you sound like someone arguing with me about something I had once written in a book between February 18, 1930 and August 23, 2006, as to Pluto being a planet when Pluto is no longer considered to be a planet. What's old is old, and recognizing this fact is a good thing.
You seem to contradict yourself.
This quote from the Watchtower of 1974 shows what their preaching was about I think.
"it was called "Zion's Watchtower and Herald of Christ's Presence." It was heralding Christ's Presence as having begun in 1874. This invisible presence was expected to continue until the Gentile Times ended in 1914, when the Gentile nations would be destroyed
This was false. Christ hadn't begun his presence in 1874 and the Gentile nations were not destroyed in 1914 according to current belief.
Russell wanted people to join in this false proclamation.
JW wanted people to join in the false preaching that the generation of 1914 would not pass away before Armageddon. If you don't you could lose your life and that of your children.
Jesus warned against those who said he had returned when he had not. JW are preaching a different message than preached in the 1st century.
and as time passes they are always shown to be wrong, progressively.
Wouldn't you agree Dj?

Djeggnog,
I was really referring to the 1974 Watchtower August 15th page 507 where it says,
"it was called "Zion's Watchtower and Herald of Christ's Presence." It was heralding Christ's Presence as having begun in 1874. This invisible presence was expected to continue until the Gentile Times ended in 1914, when the Gentile nations would be destroyed"
Also the "Jehovah's Witnesses in the Divine Purpose" Page 51.
"Pastor Russell and his associates were aware of the scripture at Matthew 24:14, which reads: "This good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for the purpose of a witness to all the nations, and then the accomplished end will come." Just how this could be finished by 1914 was not clear, but these Witnesses intensified their program even further"
I know there was a thread sometime ago with regard to what Russell taught I think it was a thread started by Essan if you wish to research it more.
this seems to be a favorite topic to bring up to any witnesses who post on any website where there are any opposers, either here or topix or anywhere.. so, here is the one and only place i will be discussing it.
who can prove that witnesses are specifically told not to post on websites about them?.
Standfirm
"Consequently let him that thinks he is standing beware that he does not fall" 1Cor 10:12
Do you think it is wise to discuss what a JW would call apostate views with apostates? I don't think they want to mend their ways so to speak do you? As you are not qualified as an Elder why are you here? Is it to learn?

The Mayans seemed to think the end of the world is in 2012. Pastor Russell thought it was in 1914.
If the earthquakes, bad weather and unrest in the middle east are leading up to the end of the world as we know it, it would seem the Mayans were closer than Pastor Russell. Maybe they had a better chronology?
Is predicting the end of the world important for a christian?
taught what about 1914?
today i uploaded a new article to my blog.
it addresses the striking accuracy of a prediction watchtower made for nearly 40 years prior to it being realized.
"If our vision be unobstructed by prejudice, when we get the telescope of God’s Word rightly adjusted we may see with clearness the character of many of the events due to take place in the “Day of the Lord”-that we are in the very midst of those events, and that “the Great Day of His Wrath is come.”" Time is at Hand 1902 p101.
It would seem that the telescope of God's Word wasn't as adjusted as they thought.
What to seems interesting to me is these ones are part of the generation that have seen the sign in 1914 of Christ's invisible presence according to the new understanding of the generation.
However they never recognized the sign as they thought Christ was present from 1874. They never changed this until after Rutherford's death.
I find it hard to believe they saw the sign.
what if there were no such things as arabic numerals (0123456789)?.
what if you only had your alphabet?!!!.
well......you could use letters as numerical values.
Terry,
What is funny I thought I read all of your three posts.
I reread them a few minutes later and on the second post I began reading some things I had not read before. I was surprised.
I thought I would count the lines I knew I had read before in the post. It turned out it was 13. I never saw the rest of the post on the first read.
(I think it's a message to me. I'm doomed)

this is a question that i have struggled with, not just as a jehovahs witness but as a believer in god.
